The Challenge of "Last-Mile" Urban Delivery
The "Last Mile" refers to the final journey from a local distribution hub to a pharmacy, GP surgery, or a patient's home. In the UK's congested urban centers, this is the most high-risk stage. In 2026, logistics providers utilize Specialized Micro-Hubs located within cities to reduce transit time.
For these deliveries, companies have moved away from heavy diesel reefers to a fleet of Electric Refrigerated Vans (e-Reefers) and temperature-controlled cargo bikes. These vehicles are exempt from London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charges and can navigate narrow streets faster than traditional trucks. The use of "smart lockers"—temperature-controlled, secure pick-up points—is also rising, allowing patients to collect sensitive prescriptions at their convenience while maintaining the cold chain.
